Practice Summary
Bret’s practice encompasses a wide variety of services directed toward advising start-ups, large corporations and academic clients on a broad range of intellectual property issues, including patent prosecution, trademark registration, patent infringement and invalidity opinions, and intellectual property portfolio analyses. Specific fields in which Bret has obtained patents for his clients include biotechnology, chemistry, medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and delivery systems, analytical devices and life science reagents. Since beginning his legal career in 1993, Bret has been instrumental in prosecuting over 1000 patent applications.
In the course of his undergraduate and legal education, Bret received an A.B. in Biochemistry from Dartmouth College in 1989 and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1992. Prior to joining colleagues Karl Bozicevic and Carol Francis in founding Bozicevic, Field & Francis, Bret was an associate with the firms of Flehr, Hohbach, Test, Albritton & Herbert, Fish & Richardson and later Bozicevic & Reed. In addition, Bret gained valuable in-house corporate experience as Director of Intellectual Property at a start-up medical device company.
His expertise in the intellectual property development and procurement process has led him to be invited by the Office of Technology Licensing at Stanford University to speak at an intellectual property seminar entitled “Patents/Start-Up 101”, a program designed to teach researchers the basics of turning concepts into products, obtaining patent protection and ultimately venture capital funding for their innovations and inventions. In addition to being sought after for his in-depth knowledge in the field of patent prosecution, Bret’s dedication to client service and driven work ethic make him a valuable asset to university technology programs and corporate intellectual property departments alike.
Bret is a member of the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association, and is admitted to practice in California and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
