Practice Summary
James has broad based experience in all aspects of biotechnology, including labeling and detection systems, recombinant protein expression, drug screening, molecular diagnostics, genomics, plant biotechnology, sequencing technology, array technology, antibody engineering, enzyme engineering, siRNA technology, cell signalling, vector construction and bioinformatics, as well as laboratory instrumentation such as mass spectrometers, microarray scanners and flow cytometers. His practice encompasses all aspects of patent prosecution at both U.S. and foreign patent offices, including appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. James currently represents a wide range of clients including academic institutions, seed money-funded start-ups and larger companies, some of which are publicly traded.

James received a B.Sc. (with Honors) in Molecular Biology from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the John Innes Institute in Norwich, United Kingdom, in 1993. James performed post-doctoral studies in genetics and molecular biology in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and in Chris Somerville’s laboratory at the Carnegie Institution of Washington at Stanford University. Prior to joining Bozicevic, Field and Francis, James gained valuable in-house experience as Manager of Intellectual Property at Mendel Biotechnology, Hayward, CA, a position that he held in addition to being a Senior Scientist.

During his career as a scientist James worked on a wide variety of subjects, including transposable elements, transcription factors, promoters, seed development and disease resistance. James’ research resulted in authorships of many publications in journals such as Cell, Science, EMBO Journal and Plant Cell.

James has been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 2001. James joined Bozicevic, Field and Francis as a patent agent in January of 2002, and was promoted to Senior Patent Agent in 2008.
